What it cost Kenya's national government to service its debt in each of the seven fiscal years to 2024/25. 63 observations in three blocks, each split external, internal and total: the charges paid, the receipts taken back on interest and loan repayments, and the net of the two.

Servicing cost more in 2023/24 than in any year before or since, 1.56 trillion shillings against 1.20 trillion the year before, and almost the whole of that jump was external. External charges rose 353.6 billion in that one year while internal charges rose 4.1 billion, so 98.9 per cent of the increase was money owed abroad. External charges then fell back to 381.2 billion in 2024/25, close to where they stood in 2018/19.

Receipts barely register. The most the government took back on interest and loan repayments in any year is 9.6 billion shillings, against 1.06 trillion of charges in the same year, so the net servicing charge is within one per cent of the gross in every year of the series.

External receipts are printed as a nil mark in all seven years and are carried as such rather than dropped. Losing the row leaves a receipts block whose two remaining rows still add up, which is how its absence would go unnoticed.
