How much electricity Kenya's five regions bought and how much never reached a meter, for the ten fiscal years to 2023/24. 80 observations across eight rows: five areas, their Sub-Total, Transmission losses, and the grand Total.

Transmission losses were 2,990.9 of 12,803.9 million kWh put onto the grid in 2023/24, 23.4 per cent lost before it reached a customer. That share has risen across the decade, from 18.6 per cent in 2014/15 to a peak of 25.3 per cent in 2020/21, and has eased only partway back down since: 2023/24 is still 4.7 points above where the decade started.

area_level marks each row component, subtotal, loss or total. Summing across levels double counts: filter to component first.

The header for 2022/23 is repaired. The source prints a bare 87.9 in that column instead of a year; the column is identified by matching its five area figures against the previous edition's own 2022/23 column, the only one that agrees with all five, rather than by position. Its values are exactly as printed; only the column's label is reconstructed.

This dataset and ke.knbs.electricity-sales-by-user.annual do not add up against each other, and are not meant to. This one is fiscal years and excludes sales to Rural Electrification Schemes by its own footnote; that one is calendar years and includes them. For 2023/24 against 2024, this dataset's Sub-Total (9,813.0 million kWh, excluding Rural Electrification) plus that dataset's own Rural Electrification figure (684.79 million kWh) is 10,497.79, against that dataset's Total of 10,751.75: a gap of 253.96 million kWh even after adding Rural Electrification back. Anyone holding both will be tempted to add them; do not.

Fiscal years run 1 July to 30 June.
