How much Kenya's trade moves, as opposed to what it costs, for the ten years to 2024. Volume indices for nine SITC sections on each side of the ledger, base 2009 = 100. 220 observations.

Kenya shipped 52.4 per cent more goods in 2024 than in 2015 and earned only 20.7 per cent more per unit for them, while paying 35.2 per cent more per unit for imports whose volume rose 27.3. Put together, the volume growth on the export side is the larger number and the price movement went the other way.

That pairing is the reason to publish this table beside the price indices rather than instead of them: a rising trade bill can be more goods or dearer goods, and neither table can tell you which alone.

Machinery and transport equipment is the import section whose volume moved least, up 11.7 per cent from 82.0 to 91.6 with a trough of 57.2 in 2018, against an import price index for the same section that is the highest in the table throughout. On the export side, beverages and tobacco is the only section of either flow whose volume fell over the decade, from 124.0 to 64.4.

Figures are index numbers on a 2009 base, not quantities, so they compare a section with its own past and never with another section.
