Quarterly statistics on Rwanda's retail payment channels, published by the National Bank of Rwanda (BNR) and the backbone of the country's digital economy story. Four channels are covered: mobile payment, mobile banking, internet banking, and payment cards. For each channel the series reports transaction volume (number of transactions) and transaction value (in RWF million), alongside adoption metrics such as registered and active mobile subscribers, mobile-money agents, internet and mobile banking subscribers, and the numbers of ATMs, point-of-sale terminals, debit cards and credit cards. Mobile payments dominate: their value grew from about RWF 1.8 trillion in 2018 to RWF 30.1 trillion in 2024, across roughly 2.5 billion transactions. BNR compiles the figures from payment service providers and operators and publishes them as spreadsheets through its /pastat statistics endpoint, from which the pipeline fetches and parses the four channel files each quarter. Note on scope: the mobile payment channel here is the full Mobile Payment Statistics series, covering all transaction types including cash-in and cash-out, and is therefore broader than the narrower mobile money headline reported in the BNR annual report; the two are not directly comparable. Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) is not exposed by this endpoint and is out of scope.
