Who burns Kenya's fuel, for the seven years to 2024. 75 observations across nine consumer categories and the total, in thousand tonnes.

Road transport is nearly three quarters of it and barely moves: 3,743.0 of 5,189.2 thousand tonnes in 2018, 72.1 per cent, and 3,777.7 of 5,199.4 in 2024, 72.7 per cent. Everything else in the table competes for the remaining quarter.

Aviation is the second consumer and the one COVID hit hardest: 710.8 thousand tonnes in 2019, 392.7 in 2020, a fall of 44.8 per cent in a single year. It took until 2024 to pass its 2018 level, reaching 722.9.

Power generation is the category that changed shape. It burned 34.2 thousand tonnes in 2018 and 228.8 in 2023, 6.7 times as much, before falling to 129.6 in 2024. Kenya's grid is overwhelmingly geothermal, hydro and wind, so this line is what the thermal plants ran when the rest could not meet demand.

This is the same national aggregate as ke.knbs.fuel-sales.annual, partitioned differently. That dataset is the Statistical Abstract's Table 9.7, the same fuel split by product rather than by buyer, over ten years rather than seven. The two reconcile: the eight products sum to the total printed here, exactly in 2019 through 2023 and to within 0.1 in 2024. That matters because the Abstract's table prints no total of any kind, so this dataset is the only published sum those years have.

The two are not merged into one dataset because they come from different publications with different spans. Reading them together is the point; adding them together would double count.

One category exists in one edition only. The 2023 edition prints a Balancing Item, worth 0.1 thousand tonnes in 2018 and 0.0 in every other year it appears, which the 2024 and 2025 editions drop entirely. It is carried for the years the source prints it and absent for the years it does not, rather than being back-filled with zeroes it never published.

Read from three editions of the Economic Survey, not one, so the series reaches 2018 instead of 2020. Every cell the editions share agrees. In the 2025 edition this table is captioned "Chapter 3 Employment, Earnings and Consumer Price Indices Tables", a caption belonging to an entirely different chapter, so it is found by two row labels this table prints and no other table in the chapter does.
