How many people live in a Kenyan household, how much floor space each of them has, and how the household holds its home, from the 2023/24 Kenya Housing and Real Estate Surveys. Six household-size bands carry a household count and the average floor area per person; each of four tenure statuses carries its household count and the share of it falling in each band.

Space runs out fast as a household grows. A household of one or two people averages 31 square metres a person, one of three or four 16.9, and one of eleven or more 4.6, so the smallest households have nearly seven times the floor space per person of the largest. The national average is 19.4 square metres.

Kenya has 13,886,126 households and two thirds of them are small: 34.1 per cent hold one or two people and 33.5 per cent three or four, while just 0.6 per cent hold eleven or more. Renting households are smaller than owning ones. Of the 4,635,229 households that pay rent, 48.3 per cent are one or two people, against 24.4 per cent of the 8,503,898 that own; of the 637,765 living rent-free with the owner's consent, 58.8 per cent are that small.

This dataset is two tables because their totals are the same 13,886,126 households, Table 20.3 printing it as one figure and Table 20.4 as four tenure counts that add to it exactly. Table 20.4's owner total also equals the Kenya row of ke.knbs.home-acquisition.irregular, three tables earlier in the chapter, at 8,503,898.

Note that Table 20.4 changes unit inside its own columns: its six band rows are percentages summing to 100 down each tenure, and the Total row beneath them is a household count rather than a share total. This dataset carries that row as the indicator households at the size band ALL SIZES, never as a share.

This is one survey round rather than a series, published under the same rule as the 2019 census.
