How much of a renting household's spending goes on rent, for Kenya and each of its 47 counties, by rural, urban and all areas, from the 2023/24 Kenya Housing and Real Estate Surveys. The table's caption dates it 2024, the fieldwork year of that survey round.

Rent takes 36.9 per cent of a renting household's expenditure nationally, 38 per cent in urban areas and 29.6 per cent in rural ones. The spread across counties is wide: Kajiado's renters spend 64.7 per cent of their expenditure on rent, Kisii's 54.6 and Kericho's 53.2, while Tana River's spend 22.3 per cent, Migori's 24.5 and Homa Bay's 24.7. Twelve counties sit above 40 per cent. Rural rent is not always the cheaper kind: in Wajir it is 73.9 per cent of expenditure against 32.5 in town, and in Kericho, Marsabit, Samburu, Siaya and Bungoma the rural share is also the higher one.

Mombasa, Isiolo and Nairobi City print no rural figure and their total equals their urban one; the dataset carries no rural row for them. The total is a weighted mean of rural and urban and lies between them in every geography, which is what is checked, since a share of expenditure has no total to reconcile to.

This is one survey round rather than a series, published under the same rule as the 2019 census. ke.knbs.housing-tenure.irregular, from the same chapter, gives the share of households in each county that rent at all.
